The majority of historically disadvantaged school going and out-of-school youth in South Africa have had limited access to relible information on their options for post-school education and training careers and career pathways and employment/self-employment opportunities. As a result, many young poeple have made education and career choice on the restricted information available to them from peers, teachers and parents, and with  little consideration of their own hopes and dreams and the needs of the labour market.

 

Youth development is part of building non-sexist, non-racist, democratic South Africa and it should be approached in a similar manner  and with similar strenght as other crucial areas in need of transformation, vis disability, gender and economnic participatrion. This should be done in line with government's broad approach to fundamentally address poverty and under-development through comprehensive, integrated, cross-sectoral and sustainable policies and programmes.
